AFTER a round 8 hiccup against Port Pirates last week, Grafton Redmen Women’s side were back in the winner’s circle with a commanding 27-0 whitewash against Marlins.
Even if the game didn’t reach any great heights in a stop-start affair, the victory itself felt like a thing of rare beauty to the Redmen supporters.
Grafton opened the scoring after the McHugh sisters Tamar and Yuri combined to send Esther Barker over, then, after sustained pressure and several phases, Redmen captain Tamar McHugh crossed for Grafton to take a 10-0 lead heading to the sheds.
After the break Tamar scored her second five-pointer to increase the lead and when Ebony Weaver scored out wide all of a sudden, the home side were up 20-0.
A clever blindside play by the Redmen captain saw Esther Barker claim a double to put the game beyond doubt.
It was case of the walking wounded for Grafton with several players nursing plenty of bumps and bruises.
Redmen forward Jesyka Boyle typified Grafton’s “special bond” and not letting teammates down when she returned to the field after a nasty gash above her right eye.
The victory sees Grafton maintain second spot on the Mid North Coast ladder.
