The Grafton Rugby Football Club was formally established in 1969, however there is a significantly longer Rugby heritage in the City.
By the late 1960s there was enough interest in re-establishing a local rugby club. A press release was made in late 1968 calling for a meeting for anyone interested in forming a Grafton Rugby Club.
Forty-two attended and it was moved that a Grafton Rugby Union Football Club be formed.
There was plenty of healthy debate after a committee was formed, in particular the Club colours. A motion of red and white hoops and white shorts was passed by those in attendance by the barest of margins, 10-9.
Club membership fees were set at $2 for players and $4 for associates, and with that, the Grafton Rugby Football Club had taken its first step.
