A lacklustre start saw Grafton’s men’s first grade side go down 38-14 to a committed Kempsey Cannonballs on Saturday. It was a costly game for the Redmen, who lost star rookie fullback Jerry Waterson in the first five minutes of the game which looked like a season-ending shoulder injury.

Grafton’s poor ball security and “clunky” attack gave the home side a mountain of possession in the first half and it showed on the scoreboard.

To their credit Grafton won the second half and the majority of the set-pieces but it was too little too late.

Grafton’s new signing John King popped up everywhere in attack and defence while utility back, Nick McCabe proved he has what it takes to play in the top-grade this season.
