An era of big, uncompromising forward packs dominated the playing style of Grafton. Boasting players like Benson, Fallon, Brookes, Meehan, Denshire, Foster, Ryan, Collie, Smith and Thompson gave the Club character and identity.

This era saw a love-hate relationship develop with Coffs Harbour. Coffs set the standard since entering the competition in 1973 winning eight premierships in a row. Consequently Grafton-Coffs games created an intense rivalry.

This era saw Grafton come of age. First grade made the grand final in 1978 and 81 while second grade took out the premiership in 1977 and 81. A first grade premiership still eluded the Club.
